Why High Court judge threw out nanny’s Sh28 million suit against Kabus

Image
Simon Kabu and Sarah Njoki’s former nanny has appealed to the Court of Appeal after an Employment and Labour Relations court threw out her case of sexual harassment, right to dignity, and invasion of privacy against the estranged married businessmen. The woman had sued the separated couple -directors at Bonfire Adventures travel agency - for more than Sh28 million, claiming her rights were violated by the estranged couple while working as their employee. In December 2024, the woman was thrust into the spotlight after Simon allegedly leaked video footage of an altercation between her and Sarah. The footage sparked a trending topic on social media about the marital woes of the two Bonfire Adventure directors, with the woman claiming it also led to her being bastardized on social media and branded a husband snatcher. She says Simon and Sarah's marriage was on the rocks long before she was hired and was only being used by the couple as a scapegoat for their marital woes. JK (the woman...

Wyre puzzled by how clout chasing aids Kenyan musicians careers

Image
Legendary rapper and singer Kevin Wyre says he is struggling to understand what value publicity stunts bring when promoting new music releases. It’s a strategy that has been rampantly employed with the current generation of musicians whenever pushing for their new music releases. Wyre, whose music career spans over two decades, says he is yet to understand how the tactic works and if indeed, it translates into any meaningful conversion as far as new music releases are concerned. “I am not very much into the kiki thing (publicity stunts) because I’m from the generation of artistes who valued sales of music, or how many fans you can pull to buy tickets to your shows. I am from that school of thought; for me, that is what was a gauge of what a successful artiste is, and I still try to maintain that to date.” Wyre says. He, however, says he does respect the new publicity stunt as a marketing strategy. “There is now a new generation with the kiki thing that may be working for them, it’s a ...

EACC after ‘moral police’ Ezekiel Mutua for illegal Sh22 million salary

Image
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is seeking to recover Sh22.7 million from former Kenyan Film Classification Board (KFCB)  boss Dr Ezekiel Mutua. The anti-graft watchdog alleges Dr Mutua, currently the CEO of the Music Copyrights Society of Kenya (MCSK) acquired millions through irregular salary hikes and entertainment allowances not provided in law. In its recovery lawsuit, the agency alleges Dr Mutua had his salary illegally bumped up to Sh1.1 million in 2019, similar to that of an MP, following an irregular and unlawful board decision that he was a member of. The watchdog argues that Dr Mutua’s salary had been capped at Sh480,000 even after increment by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for the KFCB corner office he occupied from 2015 to July 2021. It also accuses him of illegally earning an entertainment allowance of Sh100,000 a month since 2016. “The plaintiff (EACC) claim against the 1 st defendant (Dr Mutua) is for a sum of Sh22,658,085  b...

If it was for money, I wouldn’t have accepted RHON – Minne

Image
Minne Kariuki Njugana aka Minne Cayy is known for speaking her mind without a filter. She is not only a screen actress but also a stage performer and an influencer. Minne also appears on the reality TV show The Real Housewives of Nairobi (RHON). Yes, I am breastfeeding, but that doesn't mean I can't drink (alcohol). It is a misconception that a breastfeeding mother can't drink, I indulge a lot.  My opinion is, that if you are a breastfeeding mother and feel the need to indulge (drink), then you need to wait at least for us after taking the alcohol before you can breastfeed. This is to allow your body to wash the alcohol out of your system.  I started my year last year pregnant, gave birth, and then went through the worst postpartum (period). I lost a lot of blood. Nevertheless, I got back to grinding and got cast for the second season of Disco Matanga and that's how I finished my 2024.  Right now I'm trying to raise awareness about something called postpartum hemo...

Is TikTok profiting from sexual content in Kenya? CA launches probe

Image
The Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has launched a formal investigation into allegations that TikTok has been profiting from sexual content on livestreams involving teenagers. In a public notice on Thursday, the CA said it has also ordered the Chinese-owned social media company to remove all adult content involving minors from the platform, including on livestreams. In its expose, the BBC said it spoke to three women in Kenya who said they began the activity as teenagers, adding that they used TikTok to openly advertise and negotiate payment for more explicit content to be sent through other messaging platforms. "In some of the live streams we watched, coded sexual slang was used to advertise sexual services. The emoji gifts act as payment for the TikTok livestreams and - because Ti...

President Samia bows to Diamond’s pressure, pledges $172 million for arena

Image
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has bowed to pressure from Bongo Flava's Diamond Platnumz to build a modern arena for concerts in the country. The recent Trace Music Summit and Awards held in Zanzibar left more than to be desired after the concert stage kept crumbling, something Diamond argues left the host country looking egg-faced in the eyes of the caliber of guests who graced the event, ranging from high-profile international music executives, presidents of some of the world's biggest music record labels, international music producers and other music stakeholders. "Trace had a hard time setting up the concert stage in Zanzibar, the setup kept crumbling down, it was embarrassing, especially considering the kind of high-profile guests we were hosting for the event." Vented Diamond after the conclusion of the summit last month. He added, "The government needs to save us from such embarrassments in the future by building us an arena. We need this infrast...
