A survey conducted by Infotrak reveals that 62% of Kenyans believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction. According to the report, which was released on Tuesday, February 28, several Kenyans credited their claims to key issues of concern currently facing the county including high costs of living, high taxes and high unemployment rates. Other respondents mentioned poor governance, bad politics, drought and poverty, corruption, poor quality of education, poor infrastructure, and unequal distribution of jobs. Moreover, the Infotrak survey was carried out in all the eight regions in the country. 63% in the Coastal region stated that the country is at a plunging state, 48% in Northeastern, 66% in Eastern, 52% in Central, 54% in Rift Valley, 66% in Western, 75% in Nyanza and 62% in Nairobi averaging to a collective 62%. The cost of sugar in Kenya may soon drop as the country prepares to receive its first consignment of duty-free sugar imports. The shipments are expected to arrive at the port of Mombasa in the coming days, with the first vessel, San Nicolas, carrying 21,000 tonnes of sugar from Thailand, scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. A second ship, Sheng Heng Hai, is expected to dock on Wednesday, although the volume of sugar it is carrying has not been disclosed. Normally, imports of sugar would attract a duty of 50 percent, but the Kenyan government opened an import window in December that would allow traders to ship in 100,000 tonnes of sugar duty-free from outside the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) region to curb an imminent shortage in the country. The government has also allowed the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) to import a further 200,000 tonnes of sugar duty-free. The government will impose higher taxes on cheap imports that are locally produced in Kenya in a bid to protect local businesses. Industry Principal Secretary Juma Mukwana pointed out that heavy taxation on cheap goods is aimed at cushioning local industries from stiff competition from the cheap products. "The (Trade) CS (Moses Kuria) has pronounced himself on this issue but what I would to say is that as we attract investors, we don't want them to use Kenya as a dumping ground for cheap products that we are higher taxes on some of these products to discourage us from importing what we are producing or can produce, “said the PS.  The PS made the remarks on Monday during the first Eldoret investment conference that brought together the business community within the region. Irene Masit, the embattled commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was dealt a big blow on Monday, February 28 after a tribunal appointed by President William Ruto recommended her sacking from office. The tribunal chaired by Court of Appeal Judge Aggrey Muchelule said Commissioner Masit who was suspended from office should be fired because of gross misconduct stating that her decision to agree with the proposal by two delegations which sought to have IEBC moderate the election results on August 15, 2022, in favor of Raila Odinga was inappropriate. “…this Tribunal recommends … that Commissioner Irene Cherop Masit be removed from office as a member of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission,” the tribunal said. The Kenyan government has received a helping hand from the United States of America (USA) to fight the current hunger and drought that is plaguing the nation. Through the U.S Agency for international Development (USAID), Kenya received Khs. 16 billion shillings which is set to at least support 1.3 million people in the country. Concern has been raised in Bomet town after a 21-year-old student at Bomet University stabbed his boyfriend to death. Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has offered to help the owner of embattled China Square to set up a manufacturing plant in Kenya. According to Kuria, the investor will then work in partnership with Kenyan traders. “I will assist China Square Owner Mr Cheng to set up a manufacturing plant in Kenya and work on a distribution partnership with Gikomba, Nyamakima, Eastleigh, Kamukunji, Muthurwa and River Road Traders,” Kuria announced through a tweet on Saturday evening. 57 deaths have been reported in the Brazil’s southeastern Sao Paulo state after floods rummaged through the area on Friday. The massive rainfall experienced caused landslides and flooded the coastal towns of Brazil’s richest state, with Sao Sebastiao affected the most.
