The Kenya Times ~ Trending, Breaking News and Videos DOJ Drops Maxwell Transcripts and Epstein Files —300 Pages of Secrets Revealed The Justice Department on Friday released transcripts and audio files of two days of interviews with Ghislaine Maxwell, conducted last month at her federal prison. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche led the sessions, which covered Maxwell’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein and her knowledge of figures linked to him. Officials also provided the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee with an initial set of records tied to Epstein. The files, described by the panel as numbering in the thousands of pages, included more than 300 pages from Maxwell’s interviews. The release followed a subpoena approved in July after bipartisan pressure for access to the so-called “Epstein Files.” Committee Chair James Comer said the volume of material delayed the handover beyond the committee’s initial deadline set for earlier that week.   Democrats on the commi...

LeBron James and son Bronny team up on the Lakers in historic draft

Image
Bronny James was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the NBA draft on Thursday, bringing his father LeBron one step closer to fulfilling his long-held dream of playing alongside his son. Bronny, 19, was informed of the Lakers decision with a phone call from general manager Rob Pelinka while his dad gave an emotional champagne toast to family and friends when they received the news at a restaurant in New York, ESPN reported. Bronny and LeBron will be the first father-son duo to play in the league at the same time and on the same team and while Bronny is not expected to log significant minutes in his rookie season, it will no doubt be a special moment when they appear together for the first time on the NBA hardwood. Kenyan diaspora in US reject Ruto’s plan to engage Gen Zs

Image
Kenyans living in Washington DC, USA, have rejected President William Ruto's plans to engage the public through the recently announced National Multi-Sectoral Forum and instead want the Head of State to speak directly to Gen Zs in the country. They also want the immediate release of all those arrested during the nationwide protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which saw demonstrations in 35 of Kenya's 47 counties. The group is also calling for the release of the remains of those killed in the Githurai shootout on the night of June 25, which they claim were taken by the state. They have also called for the immediate recall of the US ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, who they accuse of "becoming the Ruto regime's official fixer and working tirelessly to legitimise his regime". In a scathing letter to the Kenyan government, they accused President Ruto of calling the Gen Z who took part in the protests criminals in what they said was an attempt to jus...

Suspected female suicide bombers kill at least 18 in Nigeria, authorities say

Image
At least 18 people were killed and 30 others injured after a series of attacks by suspected female suicide bombers in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state on Saturday, the head of the local state emergency management agency said. Borno is at the centre of a 15-year Islamist insurgency that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions more. Although the Nigerian military has degraded the capabilities of the militants, they still carry out deadly attacks against civilians and security targets. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Borno state police were not immediately available for comment. Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), are the most active militant groups in Borno, a large swathe of rural hinterland the size of Ireland. from Nairobi News https://ift.tt/4g0DPB6 via IFTTT

This revelation came to light after a viral post on X, where he announced his decision to sever ties with Safaricom. In the post, Ombachi explained that he would no longer work with Safaricom as an influencer due to allegations that the company had intentionally disrupted their services on the evening of Tuesday, the 25th, following protests against the Finance Bill, 2024. The protest saw youth invade Parliament in a bid to persuade MPs reject the Bill. The announcement sparked a debate among social media users, with some questioning the authenticity of Ombachi's decision. ‘I am sorry for not listening to you,’ MP David Gikaria

Image
Nakuru East MP David Gikaria issued a rare apology on Friday for voting in favour of the controversial Finance Bill 2024. It was a symbolic apology that saw the MP and his wife wearing a white designer T-shirt emblazoned with the words 'I am sorry. Please forgive me for not listening to you and rejecting the Finance Bill. The T-shirt, he says, was printed by a Gen-Z, an umbrella term for the youth born between 1996 and 2012, who have been leading the majority of protests against the Finance Bill and who, incidentally, are campaigning for its outright rejection. The youth forced President William Ruto to make a rare climb-down and back down, refusing to sign the controversial Finance Bill after nationwide protests in at least 35 of Kenya's 47 counties. In an interview with Nation.Africa, Mr Gikaria said he decided to involve his wife in the apology because she has been his political pillar and has been involved in all his major policy decisions. "We decided as a family to...

Eric Omondi calls for women with his late brother’s children to come forward

Image
Comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi has called upon any women who had children with his late brother, Fred Omondi, to come forward. Fred tragically lost his life in a road accident on Saturday, June 15, after a night out. During a memorial service held at the Chiromo Funeral Parlor Chapel, on June, 28 Eric Omondi humorously addressed the situation, urging women with Fred’s children to present themselves. "Wawili washafika home. Wale watu wanakuja wanasema wako na watoto wa Fred tafadhali wafanane na Fred," he remarked. Terence Creative, a fellow comedian and close family friend, also made a similar plea during the memorial. He emphasised the importance of clearing any uncertainties regarding Fred's responsibilities. "We don't want anyone to come and destroy our brother's name that he is not raising children. If you are out there and you have Fred's baby please see Eric. Also, if Fred had your debt, also make sure you see us today after here," Teren...

I waited for Amber Ray for two years – Rapudo

Image
Kennedy Rapudo has shared the story of how he met socialite Amber Ray, who is now the mother of his third child. Their paths first crossed at DNM Park in Mountain View in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the initial spark, Rapudo chose not to pursue a romantic relationship at that time due to being in another relationship. "There used to be a place around Thika Road where I used to go to just chill and relax. I went there, and then there was Amber looking at me. That was our first encounter," Rapudo recounted. "I went and said hi, told her I had seen her on social media and she looked beautiful. She was with someone at that time. I was also dating." Their next significant interaction occurred when Amber invited Rapudo to an event she organized. Amber was still in a relationship, leading to an awkward encounter. "She invited me to a love fest at Two Rivers after a week or two. I went, thinking she was single, but I found her there with ...

Image
In the spirit of ‘Salimieni huyo’, Kenya's Generation Z has cornered Lavington United Church, compelling its leadership to cancel a fundraiser event scheduled for this Sunday. An invitation card signed by Reverend Simon Mutahi, seen by Nation, read, “The pastoral team and church leadership cordially invite you to a fundraising event to complete our sanctuary on June 30, 2024, from 10 am at Lavington United Church. The clergy condemned the incident and urged the youth to show restraint and embrace dialogue. "It was not fair what the youths did to their MP," said Bishop David Njoroge of Neema Lema Church. "Jobs are not created by destroying other people's property or looting, but only by respecting the government and following the law," the clergyman said. The MP is counting losses running into millions of shillings after his property was torched by the protesters. Two of his vehicles were reduced to ashes. The MP's Ford Ranger was damaged after its windscreen was smashed by angry protesters, ...

Image
Several people were shot by police, with initial reports that at least three are dead after a rioting crowd broke into and looted the Clean Shelf Supermarket in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, on Thursday night. At least 50 people were also arrested in a sting operation.  The looters took advantage of protests against the Finance Bill, 2024 in the area to loot and vandalise shops. By the time the police arrived, many of the looters had fled on motorbikes and some on foot. According to SCPC Kajiado North Mr Hussein Abduba, the chaos in the area started around 2pm and lasted for most of the afternoon. Transport crisis: Fewer vehicles on the road as Gen Z’s anti-finance bill protest intensifies

Image
The main roads leading into Nairobi's CBD saw fewer motorists on Tuesday morning due to protests against the Finance Bill. Usually, heavy traffic is reported in the morning hours on major roads in the city, including Uhuru Highway, Ngong Road section, University Way, Thika Road and Jogoo Road. The traffic situation is indicative of the panic that has gripped residents and traders in Nairobi, despite government assurances that businesses will be protected. Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki said in his address on Monday that security would be in place to protect protesters as well as other people going about their daily routines. The situation in the city suggests that the government has deployed heavy security, as anti-riot police can be seen in various corners of the CBD. Most shops are closed as the sound of tear gas canisters fills the air as early as 8.30am. The demonstrations against the Finance Bill are now in their second week, ahead of the bill's expe...

Explained: The original intentions of disco matangas

Image
For some of you, dear readers, the nearest you have come to witnessing a disco matanga is through viral user-generated videos and skits online. For others, they may have probably had the opportunity to attend such funeral vigils. You've seen the heavy drinking and smoking, the suggestive dancing between intoxicated men and women, local bouncers controlling who gets to dance with certain tantalising women for certain prices, others dramatically mourning and wailing the deceased in one corner while some are seated in barazas - talking and silently mourning with the family while others gossip the deceased. Welcome to an ordinary scene of a disco matanga - a 'traditional' funeral rite where some Kenyan families and neighbours gather in the village home of a deceased person to hold a vigil and celebrate the life of the departed; and mourn with the family at the same time. However, over the years, disco matangas evolved into parties and merry-making events, often at the expens...

The revamped show w...

National human rights lobby demands release of 105 arrested in protests

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has called for the immediate release of people arrested during the 'Occupy Parliament' protests. In a statement on Friday, the human rights lobby said a total of 105 people were arrested and 200 injured during the ongoing protests. They include Nairobi (20), Garissa (2), Kisumu (3), Vihiga (4), Narok (4), Uasin Gishu (70), and Nakuru (2). Only 14 people have been released so far, according to the commission. It has also called for a thorough investigation into the death of Rex Masai, a 29-year-old man allegedly gunned down by a police officer on Thursday night. In a statement, KNHCR Chairperson Roselyn Odede faulted the police officers for unleashing violence against the anti-Finance Bill 2024 peaceful protesters and called on authorities to restrain themselves. “KNCHR would once again like to commend protestors for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves during the demonstrations. Shiksha Arora: No amount of money can make me want to market condom brands

Image
Some call her the dancing TV news anchor. Others call her an influencer while some simply refer to her as a content creator. Shiksha Arora doesn’t seem to disagree with any of that. I do all these things because of passion. Passion makes the world go round, makes an individual do crazy things: climb mountains and trees. If you are passionate about something no matter how hard it is or it may seem, you will make it happen. Somehow, you will figure out a way to do it. We live in a day and age where, the more you multitask, the more you increase your chances of being successful. Condom brands are the one kind of clients I wouldn’t work with. As much as I believe in safe sex, it does clash with my personality of being a news anchor. Even if the deal is too good, Sh10 million or more, I still wouldn’t do it. I don’t think I can do it; honestly speaking. As for betting brands, I can think about it because I feel like there is a grey area around it. But on the top of my mind, condom sitaki. ...

Vivian: I got trolled for taking a selfie with Steve Harvey

Image
How did it feel to go viral and have Kenyans learn about your relocation after your photo with Steve Harvey? About my selfie with Steve Harvey, I intentionally posted it and I did not expect anything less of what was said. Kenyans can be bullies but I am no longer affected by trolls. I partially re-located to the United States and I live in Georgia. I am in school, so that is one of the reasons I came here. I am doing a course in psychology. I’m almost completing my studies but I am also ready to explore the opportunities available. It was a different atmosphere, but I felt like I needed this way of life. I had just done a short course in marketing but I had never specialised. When I wanted to go back to school before, my music career had blown up and I didn’t have enough time. I have decided to get out of my comfort zone. The universe has its plans for all of us and I am taking this season as immense growth. I also felt like Kenya was so hostile for me, especially after I went throu...

Police sensed "a strong smell of alcohol coming from the defendant's breath," the affidavit said. The person who complained told officers he did not want to press charges, but wanted Scott off the boat. "Through the long walk from the vessel to the boardwalk, the defendant walked backwards yelling obscenities to the occupants of the vessel," officers wrote. Scott left the scene, but soon returned and head...

Bromance: Kim Jong Un gives pair of dogs to Putin

Image
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a pair of Pungsan dogs, a local breed, state media KCNA reported on Thursday. Kim and Putin were seen looking at the dogs, who were tied to a rose-covered fence, during a segment aired on the state-controlled Korean Central Television on Thursday. The two bonded over animals as Kim fed carrots to a horse while Putin patted it on its head. They also took turns driving each other around in a Russian-built Aurus limousine on Wednesday. Kim, a horseman, was famously pictured riding a white stallion in Mount Paektu during snowfall in photos released by state media in 2019, flooding the internet with memes. He was seen riding a white horse again in a propaganda video in 2022. The horses Kim rode are symbolic for North Korea, which named its economic effort to recover from the 1950-53 Korean War after the mythical winged horse Chollima. The country's latest rocket booster is also named Chollima-1. Putin,...

Explained: Why spouses end up resembling each other over time

Image
Shared experiences, habits, being synchronised emotionally and physically are among the reasons couples who have spent many years together begin to look alike. They unconsciously mirror each other's speech and mannerisms so much that they could be taken for siblings. They will adopt a similar gait in walking, take on one dietary regime and have daily routines that complement each other. It becomes difficult for outsiders to discern where their individualism begins and ends because their partnership has evolved. Visually, they would even start subtly resembling each other. Nairobi News spoke to Nairobi-based pastor John Juma to get an insight. "The Bible speaks of a couple becoming one flesh in marriage. Over time, a man's blood circulates in the woman's body and vice versa. This occurs when intimacy takes place and no conception happens. The circulating blood alters the DNA of an individual in miniscule ways and over the years, the couple begins resembling each other,...
