Officials also provided the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee with an initial set of records tied to Epstein. Posta employees go without salaries for four months, COTU asks Ruto to intervene

The Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) has asked President William Ruto to intervene in the welfare of employees at the Postal Corporation of Kenya, known as Posta. The union indicated Posta workers had not been paid for the past four months, creating financial challenges at a time when schools are reopening and parents are required to pay school fees, amongst meeting other needs. In a press statement released on August 31, 2023, Cotu Deputy Secretary General Benson Okwaro said the financial challenges at Posta, which reportedly commenced in 2020, have affected the capacity of the workers to discharge their duties effectively. Suspected drug peddler ‘mathee wa Ngara’ denied bail

A Nairobi court has denied suspected drug peddler Nancy Kigunzu alias Mathee wa Ngara temporary freedom in relation to a case in which she is charged with trafficking drugs worth Sh18 million. Also denied bail is Eugene Gumba, her co-accused. Magistrate Njeri Thuku, in arriving at her judgment, agreed with the prosecution that the two suspects were a flight risk owing to the nature of the case. "Prosecution has placed strong compelling reasons. It is not in the interest of justice to grant bond," said Thuku. Two other accused persons in relation to this case were however released on bail. They are Teresia Wanjiru, who was granted a bail of Shs 50,000. She will be required to provide two contact persons, one of whom has to be a blood relative. A group of senior military officers in Gabon while appearing on national television on Wednesday, August 30 morning said they have seized power in the country. The Senior Gabonese military officers made this announcement shortly after the incumbent President Ali Bongo Ondimba was announced winner of the election. “We have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” the officers said. Cabinet Approves Scrapping of NHIF

The Cabinet on Tuesday, August 29 approved the scrapping of the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) as part of efforts to achieve Universal Healthcare (UHC) in Kenya. During a Cabinet meeting chaired by President William Ruto at Kakamega State Lodge, the Cabinet resolved that NHIF will be replaced by three independent funds. The opposition has condemned President William Ruto's recent remarks towards investors. Speaking in Bungoma on August 28, 2023, the Head of State appeared to threaten am investor with either deportation, a jail term or 'journey to heaven'. Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi is yet again in trouble with Members of County Assembly (MCAs) who have called him out for mismanagement of county affairs. Businessman Jaswant Singh Rai has been released after unknown men abducted him in broad daylight on Friday, August 25 evening as captured on security cameras. His lawyer Kioko Kilukumi confirmed his release saying the abductors let Singh go on Sunday, August 28 adding that the businessman was shaken but fine and back with his family. The recent nationwide power outage that has left many parts of Kenya in darkness has prompted Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) to issue a clarifying statement denying any responsibility for the disruption. The power outage, which began on Friday, August 25, 2023, has caused concerns among citizens and has led to speculations about its origin. In a press statement released on August 26  today, LTWP addressed the speculations and social media reports that had pointed fingers at them. According to the statement, LTWP was forced to cease its power generation due to an overvoltage situation in the national grid system. "Lake Turkana Wind Power wishes to assert that it has not caused the current power outage. LTWP was forced to go offline and stop generation following an overvoltage situation in the national grid system, to avoid extreme damage," the statement read.
