Cop Injured during Thursday Protests in Kisumu Succumbs to Injuries

A police officer who was injured while confronting protesters in Kisumu on Thursday, March 30, 2023, has succumbed to his injuries. Ben Oduor serving at the Keroka Police Station in Nyamira was on duty at the Jamia Supermarket area during the demonstrations when he and his fellow officers were overwhelmed by the growing number of rioters. According to a police report seen by The Kenya Times, the said officer was seriously injured after the rioters started throwing stones at them. The sudden death of Kenyan artist and philanthropist Eric Okoth Onguru, better known as Kunguru, has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and fans. His family held a funeral service at the Montezuma and Monalisa Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 29. Government Moves to Enforce Sports Act

The government is working on enforcing the Sports Act which will see all clubs and training camps licensed by the Ministry of Sports. The Ministry has kicked off inspection of athletics training camps, providing registration forms to clubs, camps, professional athletes, and coaches. The camp owners are required to pay a fee to the Government upon submitting the filled forms, which they will return to the Ministry. As seen by The Kenya Times, the forms are from the Sports Registrar, with no specific timeframe of submission. In addition to filling in the forms, the applicants will also be required to provide the constitution of the club or camp, strategic plan, updated list of officials and members, copies of logos, and emblems, compliance, and certificates for VAT, PIN, NSSF and NHIF. Biotech Company Moderna to Set Up $500m Facility in Nairobi

The biotech company Moderna has completed the agreement meant to see through the setting up of a $500 million mRNA vaccine facility in Nairobi. Speaking at an American Chamber of Commerce regional trade summit, President Ruto said Moderna’s investment will be a catalyst for the medical and pharmaceutical industry not just in Kenya but in the whole of Africa. “This will be the only such facility on the African continent,” Ruto said According to a statement released by Moderna, the facility will manufacture up to 500 million doses of vaccine each year. “We hope to bring mRNA innovation to the people of Africa in areas of high unmet need, such as acute respiratory infections, as well as persistent infectious diseases like HIV and outbreak threats such as Zika and Ebola,” said Moderna chief executive Stephane Bancel. Police Presence Enhanced at Uhuru Kenyatta’s Ichaweri Home

Security has been enhanced at former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Ichaweri home in Kiambu County. This comes days after goons raided Uhuru Kenyatta’s family-owned property along the Eastern Bypass. According to Gatundu South sub-county police commander Jonathan Koech, a total of 30 officers have been deployed to keep watch over the home in Gatundu South constituency. Tatu City has completed the Sh1 billion infrastructure upgrade at the Kijani Ridge in Kiambu County meant to increase the property’s value by 122% compared to last year. Among the upgrades include a 5 km water supply pipeline, 2.7 km sewer lines, 12 km of fiber optic cabling, and 9.5 km of 11kV medium voltage underground power lines that have been completed in the last 14 months. ORPP Declines Request to Reserve Names Resembling ODM

Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu has refused the request to reserve and register three political names similar to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Nderitu in a letter addressed to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna heeded the request by ODM to oppose the reservation and registration of the names saying it was requested outside the confines of the Constitution. “This Office subsequently declined the application for reservation of the proposed names because they did not meet the requirements of Section 8 of the PPA,” the letter reads in part. MP Kullow Maalim Hassan dies following boda boda hit-and-run accident

Kullow Maalim Hassan, the Member of Parliament for Banisa, has passed away at a city hospital on Tuesday evening, following a hit-and-run motorcycle accident in Nairobi.  Hassan was struck by a speeding rider at Capital Centre on Saturday and was immediately rushed to Reliance Hospital in South C, before being transferred to the Aga Khan hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.  His death has sent shockwaves across the country, with colleagues and friends expressing their condolences to his family.  Also read: Video reveals how Irvo Otieno was brutalised before his death in the US   His relative, Mr Mohamud Haji, recounted the incident, saying that the MP was hit by the motorcycle while crossing the road. New information has come to light in the brutal murder of American-Kenyan citizen Edward Morema Nyagechi, 65, and his Kenyan wife, Ms Mong’ina Morema, 60, in their home in Nyamakoroto, Nyamira County. Nairobi News reports that Morema was living with a woman he had married in the US, identified in documents as Irene Pamela Omayio, while still married to Mong’ina in Kenya. Documents in our possession show that Mr Morema and Ms Omayio married on May 15, 2015, in Minnesota and owned property together in Anoka County, Minnesota. Students from Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls in Kakamega County have been admitted to the county general hospital with fever and diarrhoea.
